At first, my plan was to create a site that would help other beginner seamstress find the best sewing machine for their level and projects but as I go along, I discovered that there is a lot more to explore and learn about sewing. Shall we start?
What is the Best Sewing Machine?
Spoiled for choice?
It is always difficult to choose a good sewing machine when you are just learning how to sew.
You may feel like you are unsure of exactly what to look for. There are so many brands and different types of machines out there that you may have no idea where to start.
The truth is some of them are a bit pricey because they have advance features that I believe not all beginner sewist need to make their first DIY projects.
I have listed and review some of my top picks here on Best Sewing Machines for Beginners post.
For a good starter sewing machine, there are several features that you may be interested in:
- A smaller number of good stitches to choose from
- Easy-to-load bobbin and thread needle
- Portable or light-weight
- A free arm
These seven features can be found in many sewing machines, and you may want to choose the one that has the most or all of these options. I suggest you read our Sewing Machines Buying Guide first or watch the below video to learn more about the things you should look for a sewing machine.

Nowadays, there are a lot of sewing machines that has computerized interface that makes choosing stitches easier. The Singer 7258 is for me is the best Singer sewing machine for beginners. It is a very user-friendly computerized sewing machine. Nevertheless, these machines also tend to offer a very high number of stitches to choose from, which may be confusing for the novice sewers.
Personally, it’s all about what you want and what you are going to feel most comfortable working with. If you like working with an easily readable digital interface, a computerized sewing machine may be for you.
If you want a sewing machine that is more basic so you don’t get overwhelmed trying to find the stitch you are looking for, a simpler machine may be a better buy.
Above all, you definitely want a machine that is user-friendly. If loading your bobbin and threading your needle is such a chore that it takes longer than completing the sewing project that you are working on, that sewing machine is not a good beginner machine.
Some machines offer a much more easily loaded bobbin and threaded needle. For a sewing machine that is very easy to use as well as being lightweight and portable , try the Janome 7318 sewing machine.

You can always look for good sewing machine brands on Ebay and Amazon and try to get a used machine. There is nothing wrong with using a gently-used sewing machine, and going this route may save you a hundred dollars or so. Just be sure to check out the seller’s reviews to make sure that the seller is selling high-quality used products before you buy it.
If you plan on using your sewing machine to make costumes for yourself and your friends or to do group projects, you may want to consider a lightweight or portable sewing machine that is easily transported. Portable mini sewing machine makes crafting on the go much easier.
A free sewing arm is also an excellent feature in a sewing machine for a beginner. It will come in handy when you are hemming pants and finishing off projects such as bags and purses. But, this feature may be a bit pricey.
