It is always difficult to choose a good sewing machine when you are just learning how to sew.
You may feel like you are unsure of exactly what to look for. There are so many brands and different types of machines out there that you may have no idea where to start.
The truth is some of them are a bit pricey because they have advance features that I believe not all beginner sewist need to make their first DIY projects.
I have listed and review some of my top picks here on Best Sewing Machines for Beginners post.
You can read our sewing machine reviews for each of them so you can have an idea of which kind of starter sewing machine offers the best bang for your buck.
For a good starter sewing machine, there are several features that you may be interested in:
- Computerized
- A smaller number of good stitches to choose from

Nowadays, there are a lot of sewing machines that has computerized interface that makes choosing stitches easier. The Singer 7258 is for me is the best Singer sewing machine for beginners. Personally, it’s all about what you want and what you are going to feel most comfortable working with. If you like working with an easily readable digital interface, a computerized sewing machine may be for you.
If you want a sewing machine that is more basic so you don’t get overwhelmed trying to find the stitch you are looking for, a simpler machine may be a better buy.
Above all, you definitely want a machine that is user-friendly. If loading your bobbin and threading your needle is such a chore that it takes longer than completing the sewing project that you are working on, that sewing machine is not a good beginner machine.
Some machines offer a much more easily loaded bobbin and threaded needle. For a sewing machine that is very easy to use as well as being lightweight and portable , try the Janome 7318 sewing machine.

If you plan on using your sewing machine to make costumes for yourself and your friends or to do group projects, you may want to consider a lightweight or portable sewing machine that is easily transported. Portable mini sewing machine makes crafting on the go much easier.
A free sewing arm is also an excellent feature in a sewing machine for a beginner. It will come in handy when you are hemming pants and finishing off projects such as bags and purses. But, this feature may be a bit pricey.
