When it comes to keeping your face and neck warm while outside, nothing beats a scarf. A scarf can also act as an extra head covering if it starts to snow or rain lightly outside if you are without a hat or hood on your coat.

If you can't find a scarf in the closet because the kids decided to decorate snow people outside, you can make a few extra scarves right in your sewing room.

Here are several scarf tutorials that you can make using a sewing machine or crochet needles. I've also included several projects that don't even require any sewing.

1. No-Sew Fleece Rainbow Scarf

This fun no-sew fleece rainbow scarf is a great project for a beginner or young child. The soft fleece will feel comfortable around a child's neck as they will want to wear it everywhere they go.

You can even make the scarf more personalized by having the child pick out their favorite colors and decide on the color pattern.

2. Hidden Pocket Scarf

There are times when you have to hold your small credit card holder, phone or keys in your hands because you don't have outer pockets on your jacket. Here is a hidden pocket scarf tutorial that will show you how to make a pocket to store your items.

You won't lose your things ever again as they will be safely tucked away and out of sight.

3. Fringed Blanket Scarf

This beautiful fringed blanket scarf looks complicated. Yet it only requires a little bit of sewing as you'll learn how to make a decorative fringe just by pulling the bottom threads out. You'll want to make several in different colors and patterns.

4. Flowery Infinity Scarf

An infinity scarf is one that doesn't have two ends. Instead they are sewn together into one piece of circular fabric that slips over the head.

This flowery infinity scarf tutorial will show beginners how to make one in a few simple steps. This scarf uses lightweight materials as you can use it during the early spring and late fall while doing outdoor chores.

5. Crochet Owl Cabled Scarf

Don't blink! You will miss the owls watching you from the confines of this scarf. The crochet owl scarf will allow you to practice your crocheting skills. On the bottom of the scarf, you will create owls with pompoms as their legs. This chunky project can become a great gift for friends and family.

6. Roses’ Crossing Scarf

This infinity scarf will keep you warm and stylish at the same time. The roses’ crossing scarf is another crochet project as it has a bit more detail than the others. Yet the end result is just absolutely beautiful with the type of pattern that was chosen.

7. Crochet Shamrock Scarf

Another amazing tutorial from Sarah! Feel the luck of the Irish with the crochet shamrock scarf. Make your friends green with envy when you walk down the street with this scarf -- until you make some for them too!

8. Fluffy Clusters Crochet Infinity Scarf

Sometimes, you just want a large fluffy scarf to bury your head into when the wind chill goes down outside. You will feel nice and toasty with this fluffy clusters crochet infinity scarf tutorial.

9. Solomon's Knot Scarf

For a more lightweight and elegant scarf to wear on dates, dances, and other formal events, you want to wear the Solomon's knot scarf. This scarf tutorial has a lacy appearance that makes it look luxurious and fancy.

10. Chevron Infinity Scarf

Here is another great beginner project you can crochet when you have a free weekend. The chevron infinity scarf is colorful and festive as it has a unique zigzag design. It adds just the right amount of style without looking too flamboyant.

Check out these 10 scarf tutorials that will have you creating those wonderful neck wraps to keep warm in the chill weather. You can make them for yourself or every member of your family. Don't forget to make a few extra as gifts for your friends.

When the winter weather begins to swirl outside, all you want to do is curl up under a nice warm blanket and sip a cup of hot cocoa. Yet you can't stay inside forever. If you are forced out into the cold to run errands, take the kids to school or head off to work, you want to be bundled up from the chill.

Winter coats and jackets come in a variety of styles, lengths and fabrics that can suit any type of winter weather. Before you break out the credit card and head to the clothing store, you can take out the sewing machine and create the perfect outdoor winter attire.

Sewing a coat might seem like a complicated process. Yet it's a lot easier than it looks. Here are some coat and jacket tips to keep in mind when you take on this exciting project.

1. Decide on how you will use the jacket

Are you just looking for a winter coat that can handle the daily wear-and-tear when you run your errands? Perhaps you are looking for a nice elegant winter jacket to use when you go out to special events or dinner parties? Deciding on how you will use the winter jacket or coat will allow you to select the length, fabrics, fastenings and hoods for the apparel.

Look at coats and jackets in magazines, in stores and on people that you see outside. This technique will allow you to narrow down the style, colors and design of the coat you want, colors. Then you can pick out the right pattern that matches the project you want to make.

2. Pick out fabric that is functional and  warm

There is a wide range of fabrics that perform better in certain winter weather than others. You will have to decide on the best one based on functionality, warmth and comfort.

Some of the choices you may pick include:

  • Wool: Wool is the most common material for winter clothes due to its warm and insulating characteristics.
  • Melton: Melton fabric is made out of wool and can sometimes be combined with polyester. It is tightly woven and is felted as it provides rain and wind resistant qualities.
  • Tweed: Tweed is another type of tightly woven material as this woolen fabric comes in a wide range of colors.
  • Melton: Melton fabric is made out of wool and can sometimes be combined with polyester. It is tightly woven and is felted as it provides rain and wind resistant qualities.

Other types of fabric include denim, rayon, silk, velvet, tapestry, and whipcord. Go to the fabric store and check out how the fabric feels against the skin. You want one that is comfortably if you plan to make a coat or jacket that doesn't have an inner lining.

3. Select a lining that suits your preferences

For some beginners, they will skip the extra step of adding a lining. This is normally a personal choice. If you do decide on placing in a lining, you'll want to pick one that is lightweight and won't cause the coat or jacket to feel extra heavy on the shoulders.

You can pick silk and charmeuse linings for your coat. You can also select a silk lining that has a flannel backing for more warmth. If your winter coat will mainly be used in very cold temperatures where you will be outside often, you may decide on quilted lining to keep you extra warm.

4. Loosely fitted coats are great first projects

If this is your first coat or jacket, you may want to select a loose-fitting pattern that will drape over you as you improve your skills.

With the minimum details, you can practice on pressing the coat seams for a more finished look. Then you can move on to more elaborate coat designs once you build up your confidence. One of the simplest patterns you can work with is one that only has three pieces: the sleeves, front and back.

5. Finish off the coat with the perfect closures

Closures for your coat can consist of zippers, buttons, toggle closures, frog closures, snaps and belts.

One tip to keep in mind is that you want a closure that can be easily fastened through the buttonhole when wearing wet gloves as you don't want to struggle to open and close the coat. Skip the small closures that will be frustrating to use.

There are a wide range of designs available for winter coats. Expand your imagination and try out several different patterns, colors and styles to create the coats and jackets you will love to have during the winter months.

  • The extra-high presser foot lifter can handle lumpy fabric with ease without losing stitch quality.
  • The Singer S16 Studio has the bobbin-winding function which is ideal when working with quilts.

  CONS

  • It does not come with a free arm for free-motion sewing since it is a straight stitch machine.
  • The sewing machine also has a side-bobbin feature that could make it difficult for beginners to load the bobbin.

Brother Designio Series DZ1500F: Great for Professional sewing & NEEDLE FELTING

The Brother Designio Series DZ1500F sets itself apart due to its affordability, performance with heavy materials and its needle felting capabilities.

If you never heard of needle felting, it is a technique where you can create 3-dimensional craft projects with wool. The Brother Designio Series DZ1500F can do this easily while working with all types of other fabrics and garments.

Ideal functions it can offer to you:

  • 1,500 stitches per minute
  • 7mm maximum stitch length
  • Pin feed system
  • Needle felting attachment package
  • Color-coded feed adjustment
  • Automatic thread cutter

You won't find smoother fabric feeding than what you will get with the Brother Designio Series DZ1500F. It even offers a dual thread stand so you are always ready to continue any project without worrying about running out of thread.

  PROS

  • The Brother Designio Series DZ1500F has everything that helps people to transition into professional sewists.
  • It offers high-quality stitches even on heavier fabrics as the fabric separator tools prevents the seams from puckering.
  • You can do every craft imaginable on this sewing machine as it opens the sewing possibilities.

  CONS

  • Some people have mentioned that they had problems with thread tearing.

Singer 191D-30: Best for E-CommerCe Business

For crafters who may one day want to open up an e-commerce store or regular brick-and-mortar store to offer fabric creations to the public, the Singer 191D-30 may be the perfect one for you.

It is suitable for medium to heavy fabrics as it features a clutch motor that has tons of power as you will see speeds of up to 4,000 stitches per minute. So if you are into upholstery, home decorator or fashion designer, you will be able to create a multitude of garments, home decor and fabric crafts quickly.

Desired features available in the Singer 191D-30:

  • 4,000 stitches per minute
  • 5mm maximum stitch length
  • Knee lifter
  • Reverse lever
  • Adjustable presser foot pressure
  • H-leg stand

When it comes to speed, the Singer 191D-30 leaves traditional sewing machines in the dust. The extra-high sewing speed is reported to be 6 times faster than conventional models used in the home. If you were ever afraid of layering fabrics in the past due to dismal results, Singer 191D-30 will give that extra boost of confidence as you will have no problems sewing multiple layers of material together.

  PROS

  • The adjustable presser foot pressure function gives you extra control of the quality of the stitching based on the fabric you are working with.
  • It also features a reverse lever to making strong seams as it offers a large amount of power from the clutch motor.

  CONS

  • Due to the clutch motor, it can be noisy.
  • There is no speed adjustment available to slow it down.

Juki DDL-8700 Servo Motor: More Speed Control for Projects

Here is a Juki DDL-8700 that has a servo motor instead of a clutch motor.

I have already featured the Juki DDL-8700 in this list because it is a great, overall sewing machine. Yet sewists may want something with a bit more speed control and less energy consumption. It costs more than the one with the clutch.

It also basically has the same functions as the Juki DDL-5550 servo. The only difference is that the DDL-8700 was manufactured in China while the DDL-5550 was made in Japan.

Features in this industrial sewing machine:

  • 5,500 stitches per minute
  • Variable speed control
  • 5mm maximum stitch length
  • 110-volt servo motor
  • Machine head
  • Sewing light
  • Stand and table for mounting
  • Drawer

If you are worried about operating the Juki DDL-8700 with the clutch motor, then this industrial sewing machine with the servo motor will be just right for you. It offers some of the most optimal straight stitch quality that cannot be found with other machines in this category. You will also be amazed that such a powerful machine can operate so quietly.

  PROS

  • It offers consistent, quality stitches.
  • It can work with most light to medium fabrics, and can be used on heavier fabrics such as denim and canvas if you purchase the right needles and thread.
  • It is powerful enough to handle any project.

  CONS

  • Some people have reported that the included needles are prone to breaking because they are not a strong quality.

Under the Hood of the Best Industrial Sewing Machines

There are some big differences between an industrial and a traditional machine for home use, even if they sometimes look similar. While today's regular sewing machines are being made out of plastics to save on manufacturing costs while being lightweight for consumers, industrial sewing machine components are crafted with mostly metal parts such as aluminum and cast iron.

They are made for long production runs in factories as they required higher quality parts for durability.

Here are some of the other characteristics:

Arm and Needle Post Design

There are typically four types of industrial sewing machines based on the configuration of their arm and needle post: flatbed, post bed, cylinder bed and feed off-the-arm. The ones I will review are normally flatbed, as they look like traditional sewing machines as they have a flat base for sewing fabrics.

A post bed sewing machine has a vertical cylinder rising from the base of the machine. In the cylinder are all the feed dogs, cylinders and loopers as you can create boots, gloves, and other projects that would be difficult to sew in a prone position.

Cylinder beds have the base shaped as a cylinder as you can sew shoes, cuffs, seat covers and saddles. Feed off-the-arm industrial sewing machines are seldom used in home settings as the machine has a long horizontal column from the axis as it can be used to sew shoulder and sleeve seams.

Higher Stitch Speed

Industrial sewing machines are designed with enough power to complete projects in the shortest amount of time during long production runs. They will typically have stitch speeds of anywhere from 1000 to 5,000 stitches per minute.

Motor type

Clutch motors and servo motors are what makes the components run efficiently.

Clutch motors will run continuously even when you are not doing anything with the sewing machine. The motor is noisier as you can hear it humming. The moment you press down on the pedal you will feel the full force of the speed as the clutch motor is a power horse. It is ideal to have a clutch motor when working with very heavy fabrics such as leather and canvas.

Servo motors consume less energy than a clutch motor as they only turn on when pushing on the pedal. They are quieter and lighter than clutch motors as a servo motor has adjustable speed options. Servo motors are usually more user-friendly as they allow you to make intricate and delicate stitches while also handling heavy fabrics such as upholstery and leather.

Feed Mechanisms

Another interesting feature is that they can come with different ways in which to feed fabric through the sewing machine. Drop feed mechanisms are the most common type as the little metal teeth on the machine grab the fabric and push it along. There are also manual feed machines in which you control the fabric's direction. Other types of feed mechanisms are walker foot feeds, puller feeds, and needle feed machines.

Buyer’s Guide: Top Features to Look for!

There are certain aspects to look for when you are researching industrial sewing machines to buy. Always keep in mind the projects you plan to make as you can then narrow down your choices by seeing what type of power, stitches and work-space.

Top features to look for:

Stitch Speed

The more expensive a model will offer higher stitches per minute. Just keep in mind that you don't want to compromise stitch quality due to the speed of the machine.

Workspace

Larger sewing machines will have more clearance room along the base and under the foot. Yet you also need to be aware of the amount of room you have for the machine. You don't want one so large that takes up too much space in your sewing room.

Stitch Types

Industrial sewing machines should have all the stitch patterns that you need for your crafts. Common stitches should include plain stitches, lock stitches, overlook stitches, coverstitches and chain stitches.

Motor type

If you plan on making fabric crafts with mainly heavier fabrics such as leather, canvas and denim as well as sewing multiple layers of heavy fabrics together, you might opt for a more powerful clutch motor. If you are looking for more decorative stitching on medium and lightweight materials, then a servo motor will fit your needs.

Craft project types

There are specialized industrial sewing machines that are suited for certain types of projects. There are ones that are specifically designed to make garments while another might be the best sewing machine for leather bags and upholstery.

If the manufacturer doesn't state what the sewing machine is best for in the user guide, then take into consideration how high you can lift the presser foot. There should be a clearance of 3 millimeters between your material and the sewing needle so you can slip denim, canvas and leather smoothly underneath when sewing.

Conclusion: wrap up!

When selecting an industrial sewing machine, you want one that will fit your current needs and your future expectations. If you plan to become a professional seamstress, you want a machine that can keep up with you and your numerous craft projects. An industrial sewing machine, while being a higher cost, might be the best investment to make when looking for a reliable and durable sewing machine.

Moreover, bear in mind that these machines can be really expensive. I featured some of the lower-priced models that are still considered affordable and will offer you enough functionality when you are using them in the home. Yet if you plan to take your sewing craft to the next level and perform commercial sewing projects for profit, then do your research of both low-priced and high-priced models to select the one that can perform reliably and will be durable enough for the long term.

When it comes to looking sexy while feeling comfortable, pencil skirts are the go-to fashion item to have in your wardrobe. Today I'm sharing to you all my top 3 pencil skirt patterns that I'm dying to make for my capsule wardrobe. 😉

They are perfect when you are going to the nightclub to dance with your friends or going out on a romantic dinner date with the spouse. If you have never heard of one, a pencil skirt is like a regular skirt except it hugs your waist and legs to show off your natural curves.

Anatomy of a Pencil Skirt

  • While a regular skirt can be made with just two pieces of fabric sewn together, pencil skirts have panels of fabric. There may be 2 panels that will be sewn together or up to 4 panels of fabric depending on the design that you wish to make.
  • One of the most important aspects of making a pencil skirt, and most clothing on the sewing machine, is having exact body measurements. This aspect is especially true with pencil skirts because of the type of fabric you will use. Some fabrics will not allow for much stretch as you slip it on around your thighs and waist.
  • The pencil skirt will also have a waist band and may come with a small slit in the back or a zipper based on the style of skirt you want to sew.

Pencil Skirt Patterns

As I've said today,  I'm featuring my favorite pencil skirt patterns from Pinterest and they are all novice friendly. When you feel confident about your skills, you can try more difficult patterns that will feature bows and tied fabric designs.

Midi Pencil Skirt

I love this pencil skirt by Jessica. It is unique because it is a midi that uses a knit fabric. Knits fabrics are nice because they can give you a bit more stretch, as well as keep your legs warm in cooler weather.

This midi pencil skirt pattern is for advanced beginners who like working with knits and need that extra stretch to their clothing.

Ruffled Pencil Skirt

This ruffled pencil skirt looks absolutely beautiful. At the back of the skirt, it features ruffles along the bottom.

It is in a floral design and is perfect for most body styles. So pick out a weekend to do this project, lock the sewing door, and left the family have leftovers as you will have fun making this one.

Pencil Skirt with Pockets

For some women, they love their pockets so they can stash all their necessities inside without having to carry around large pocketbooks. Here is a pencil skirt pattern that features pockets. Melly rocks it!

Keep in mind that for this design, you will need to use a fabric that has some stretch to it so you can place your hands into the pocket holes. Look for fabric that gives at least 30% stretch, or search for fabric that is thinner for the pockets. This technique will allow you to make pockets that don't look like they are bulging out from the skirt when it is worn.

Once you have learned the basic pencil skirt design and your exact measurements, you can really play around with the types of fabrics and lengths that you want. You can make lace pencil skirts and mesh pencil skirts that feature a solid mini skirt underneath. You can even recycle old sweaters, drapes, jeans, and men's shirts into pencil skirts. Find the pencil skirt pattern that fits into your personal preferences and start sewing. Happy sewing!

Simple sewing projects don't have to actually look simple. Some beginner projects look like they may have taken days to complete when in fact they only took a few minutes to an hour.

I have gathered together some wonderful projects that are suited to beginners who want to show off the skills they have already learned, and practice on those new sewing skills to slowly become an intermediate sewist.

If you missed the first post on our "Sewing Projects For Beginners" series, here it is:

Super Sewing Projects Just Right for Beginners
You've got your sewing machine, your thread, and all the little notions for you to really start getting your sewing[...]

I hope you enjoy this week's project! Don't forget to let me know what you think and give me some blog love. 😉

1. Pillow Bed

The pillow bed looks complicated to make. Yet, in actuality, it is just four pillow covers sewn together. Making a pillow cover is one of those fast and simple crafts that just about any beginner can make.

So don't become intimidated with this project. The pillow bed is the perfect project to take on as all your kids will be stuffing their extra pillows into this bed and lounging on the floor as they play, read and listen to music.

2. Pencil Pouch

With school already in full swing, the kids are starting to lose their pencils, pens, erasers and other items that they need for classes.

This handy pencil pouch will let them find all their writing instruments as this pouch can be stuffed in book bags and lockers. You can make the pencil pouch yourself without spending a ton of money on flimsy plastic pouches.

Let your kids practice more on their sewing skills and make this project with them or you can ask them pick out the fabric colors and designs and you can have it completed in 15 minutes before they leave to catch the school bus.

3. Cord Keeper

Looking for a project that can be functional, stylish and done in a matter of minutes? Try this simple cord keeper craft.

The cord keeper will let you sort out all those headphone cords, smartphone cords, USB cords and other small cords that get tangled up in junk drawers or on top of tables. One smart idea is to color coordinate the cord keeper projects so each person in your family has a specific color assigned to them. So they know which cords are theirs based on the cord keeper color.

4. Hooded bath towel

You probably have some old towel sets in the linen closet that you don't want to get rid of, yet nobody uses. You can give them new life by turning them into a hooded bath towel.

All you need are two towels and the matching hand towel that will become the hood. These hooded bath towels are perfect to coax the kids out of the tub after their bath. It would also make a great towel robe for the pool area.

5. Fat Quarter Turtle

This adorable little turtle would make a great gift for kids and adults. It could even be used as a pin cushion.

This fat quarter turtle is a good way for a beginner sewist to learn how to do patchwork craft projects as well as some hand sewing if one of the kids is using the sewing machine right now. Its small size would also make a good stocking stuffer for the holidays.

All of the featured sewing projects come with downloadable patterns and easy-to-follow instructions so you can get started immediately. Get out the sewing machine and get to crafting as you will be able to create sewing projects for your family, friends and loved ones.

Janome HD1000: Best Sewing Machine for Upholstery Work

The Janome HD1000 can plow through any type of fabric without any missteps, yet it excels with doing large upholstery projects.

Unlike most heavy duty machines that will be made out of metal parts, the Janome has plastic parts and an aluminum body that makes it weigh a good 22 pounds.

It includes the following features:

  • 14 built-in stitches
  • 4-step buttonhole
  • 4 presser feet
  • Built-In needle threader
  • Free-motion sewing drop feed feature
  • Removable free arm
  • Front loading hook bobbin
  • Extra-high presser foot lifter

Stitch quality is exceptional as it has a stitch per speed range of 840, which can be on the low side for experts looking for a bit more rev for their dollars. Yet beginners can put this machine through its paces and explore a range of sewing projects that require heavy fabric.

  PROS

  • Janome HD1000 has good stitch quality
  • It has a wide range of built-in stitches that beginners can use without feeling overwhelmed
  • This model has enough motor power to work with heavy fabrics with ease.

  CONS

  • It lacks decorative stitches, which may be desired by seamstress for more elaborate projects.
  • It also doesn't have a drop-in bobbin feature which many crafters prefer.

Janome HD3000: Best Sewing Machine for Heavy Fabric Layers

The Janome HD3000 provides 18 built-in stitches and more power at 860 stitches per minute when compared to the Janome HD1000.

It can handle leather, denim, upholstery and other fabrics with ease. Features that are included with this machine:

  • 18 built-in stitches
  • 1-step buttonhole
  • Built-in needle threader
  • Extra high presser foot
  • Free arm system
  • Automatic Bobbin Winder
  • Reverse stitch lever

One of the outstanding aspects about this sewing machine is that it can handle sewing multiple layers of heavy fabric. While other machines struggle and stall out due to the bumpy material affecting the balance of the presser foot, the Janome HD3000 will keep on going.

  PROS

  • The Janome HD3000 handles all types of heavy fabric, including leather and denim.
  • It offers more speed than the Janome HD1000 and a few more stitch options.
  • It's the perfect mechanical machine that beginners can learn on as they can grow their skills.

  CONS

  • It's not computerized as it will turn off some more intermediate and advanced sewists although it is suited for people of all skill levels.
  • There have also been complaints from reviewers that the available sewing light is dim and could be brighter.
  • While it has more built-in stitches than the HD1000, some people may be looking for more options.

Singer 4411: Best Sewing Machine for Leather

The Singer 4411 is a very basic mechanical sewing machine, which is ideal for people who are beginners and still need to learn all the features.

This sewing machine is heavy duty as it has a powerful motor that gives you 1,100 stitches per minute. Yet despite this speed, you will sew professional stitches on all of your garments.

Additional features that are found with this machine:

  • 11 Built-In Stitches
  • Automatic 4-Step Buttonhole
  • Top drop-in bobbin
  • Three needle positions
  • 1,100 stitches per minute
  • Extra-high presser foot lifter
  • Free Arm
  • Adjustable presser foot pressure control

An added benefit is that the Singer 4411 has a metal frame for stability and a stainless steel bed plate that lets the fabric glide across.

  PROS

  • Its low cost will fit into most samstress budgets.
  • If you are doing a lot of projects, the high stitch speed will help you complete them effortlessly.
  • It can handle most fabrics as you can adjust the speed control to have more uniform stitches based on the properties of the material you are working with in your project.
  • It handles leather well, and is about the best sewing machine for leather handbags and purses.

  CONS

  • Although there is a speed control for the pressure foot, the number of stitches per minute may intimidate some beginner sewists
  • Also, the powerful motor makes the sewing machine noisier than others.
  • It is the only sewing machine on our list that has the fewest built-in stitches as it may be a drawback for more intermediate and advanced sewists who want to do more decorative work.

Singer Heavy Duty 4423: Affordable Machine with Plenty of Stitch Features

The Singer Heavy Duty 4423 is a step above the Singer 4411 as it features more built-in stitch options without compromising on power or performance.

it is equipped with a powerful motor that offers 1,100 stitches per minute. Features you will find on this sewing machine:

  • 23 Built-In Stitches
  • 1,100 Stitches Per Minute
  • Top Drop-In Bobbin
  • Automatic Needle Threader
  • Free Arm
  • Fully Automatic 1-Step Buttonhole
  • Extra-High Presser Foot Lifter

The sewing machine is perfect for beginners looking for a mechanical machine as it is lightweight and easy to use. It also features all the basic stitches that you can possibly need.

  PROS

  • The Singer 4423 can handle tons of projects on a daily basis.
  • It creates clean stitches as the motor will last.
  • It's a beginner mechanical sewing machine that offers more built-in stitches that many computerized machines offer.

  CONS

  • While the Singer 4423 can handle several layers of fabric, heavier fabrics such as denim and vinyl can cause it to slow down and struggle a bit. So it is essential to use the right needle and thread suited for those materials.
  • There are fewer decorative stitches available as the stitching for them is not as neat as other machines can do a better job.

Brother CS6000i: Best Well-Rounded Sewing Machine

The Brother CS6000i is the first computerized sewing machine we are featuring that can also be considered heavy duty.

It can handle quilting, needlework, clothing projects, home decor crafts and other projects. It is easy enough for beginners to use while offering 60-built-in stitches to satisfy advanced sewists.

You can take advantage of the following features:

  • 60 built-in stitches
  • 7, one-step buttonholes
  • Automatic needle threading
  • 9 presser feet
  • Free arm to make cuffs and sleeves
  • Twin needles
  • Six feed dogs
  • Drop in bobbin

It has a small LCD display that allows you to select the desired stitch patterns. While it has less stitches per minute compared to the sewing workhorses made by Singer, the Brother CS6000i has 850 stitches per minute as it fits nicely into the heavy duty niche in-between the featured Janome HD series already mentioned above.

  PROS

  • It is an affordable price for a computerized sewing machine with 60 built-in stitches.
  • It also comes with the additional presser feet at no additional cost.
  • It makes good stitches that are uniform as you can complete a variety of projects on the machine.

  CONS

  • Unlike other computerized sewing machines, the Brother CS6000i doesn't offer a built-in memory saver for stitches. So when you turn it off it will reset the settings to default mode.
  • The presser foot pressure also cannot be adjusted.

Brother SE400: Heavy Duty Sewing Machine that Also Embroiders

I am including the Brother SE400 sewing machine on the list as it can do regular sewing projects as well as embroidery crafts.

It features 67 built-in stitches along with 70 embroidery designs. You can take advantage of the following features:

  • 710 stitches per minute
  • 4-inch embroidery attachment
  • Automatic needle threading system
  • USB port for computer connection
  • Drop-in bobbin

While it has the lowest stitch per minute speed of 710 out of all the other sewing machines featured, the fact that it is a combination machine will allow sewists to expand on the types of projects that they can make.

  PROS

  • You can access additional embroidery designs by connecting the sewing machine directly to your computer.
  • It also has a separate arm to create embroidery designs.
  • Another advantage is that there is a backlight to the LCD screen display so you can easily read the settings.

  CONS

  • Since it is a combination computerized sewing machine, beginners may feel a little bit daunted by all the abundant features
  • The costs may also hold people back as it is on the pricier side.

Singer 8763: Cute Machine Designed for Free-Arm Stitching

Here is a simpler computerized sewing machine that has a very modern design that is eye-catching for sewists.

It has 30 built-in stitches and can perform 750 stitches per minute. Accessories that are included with the Singer 8763:

  • 30 built-in stitches
  • 2, one-step buttonhole attachments
  • Automatic drop and sew bobbin feature
  • SwiftSmart automatic needle threading system
  • Extra high presser foot lifter
  • Twin needles
  • Free arm

One of the features that sets the Singer 8763 apart is the SwiftSmart threading system that effortlessly threads the needle and automatically adjusts all the other necessary needle functions such as stitch width and length. This sewing machine is simple enough for beginners while offering plenty of functions suited for experts.

  PROS

  • It has enough stitch functions so you can do most sewing, quilting and embroidery projects.
  • The sewing machine can also easily do large sewing projects without losing balance.
  • Beginners will love the automatic sewing feature.

  CONS

  • While the Singer 8763 allows for twin needles, you have to purchase the needles separately.
  • It also has pre-set presser foot levels that cannot be adjusted.

Janome DC2014: Best Heavy Duty Sewing Machine with Electronic Speed Control

The Janome DC2014 has many of the same functions as other DC models.

It's because the manufacturer rolled out a new sewing machine each year while keeping all the same features as the only difference is the color. So you can select an older model in pink, green or blue while not losing any of the functionality that you desire.

Some of the nifty features are:

  • 50 built-in stitches
  • 6 snap-in presser feet
  • 860 stitches per minute
  • 3, one-step buttonholes
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Memorized needle up/down control function

This machine has enough stitch patterns to satisfy both beginners and advanced seamstress. You will be impressed with the stitch quality while doing tons of projects

  PROS

  • The Janome DC2014 is user-friendly for beginners
  • It offers good stitch quality and is a portable machine that can handle lots of different fabrics.

  CONS

  • This sewing machine is on the pricier side as the cost will turn off many beginner sewists who want to start off on a cheaper machine.
  • There is also no automatic needle cutter.

Brother CS5055PRW: Great heavy Duty Sewing Machine for Fashionistas

The Brother CS5055PRW is a Project Runway computerized sewing machine.

So you know that it will handle any type of fashion clothing that you want to make with it. Available features include:

  • 50 built-in stitches
  • 850 stitches per minute
  • Automatic needle threader
  • Free-motion stitching
  • Top drop-in bobbin
  • 7-point feed dog system

The machine is perfect for beginners who basically want to mend, repair, modify or make their own clothing for themselves or as a serious profession in the near future.

  PROS

  • This sewing machine provides customized buttonhole features with 5, one-step automatic buttonholers.

Characteristics of a Heavy Duty Sewing Machine

There are certain characteristics that set heavy duty sewing machines apart from regular everyday machines.

  1. One of the first things you may notice is the weight. These machines weight anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds or more due to the larger motor and mechanisms inside that are designed to handle thicker, heavy fabrics such as denim, upholstery and leather.
  2. It will have a high-speed motor that can offer around 1,000 stitches per minute, making them ideal when you are performing a large amount of sewing crafts on a regular basis.
  3. These sewing machines are built to last. The high quality models will often come with 25-year warranties. Some of the major heavy duty sewing machine companies include Singer, Janome and Brother, while Juki creates industrial sewing machines for more commercial applications.
  4.  You will also find sewing machines in a range of different prices from as low as $100 to as high as $500 or more. The price range is due to the stitch features that may be available, ease of use, speed control and motor power.
  5.  Although these featured heavy duty sewing machines will all have varying accessories, some of the more common features that most of the machines will have include a built-in needle threader, and extension bed and a free arm that allows you to make large sewing projects such as drapery, quilts, large tote bags, and even automobile upholstery.

Buyer's Guide to Select the Right Heavy Duty Sewing Machine

I have gathered together some helpful tips and advice so you can narrow down your choices in picking out the right heavy duty sewing machine for your needs.

While you will have to consider personal sewing preference and your budget, there are certain factors that you should look for if you want a heavy sewing machine.

Motor Function

One important factor is to look for a sewing machine with a strong motor. It should offer adequate to high speed so you can do lots of stitches per minute and complete projects quickly. It should be able to handle consistent amounts of projects and allow you the option to use heavier fabrics without worrying about the machine faltering and stalling.

Metal Components

Look for sewing machines with durable components. Metal sewing machines parts and gears will normally last longer and be more durable than plastic machines. If you do select a heavy duty sewing machine that is made mostly of plastic, ensure that there is a 25-year warranty included.

Sewing Fabric Layers

A heavy duty sewing machine should also have no problems sewing through multiple layers of fabric. It needs to be equipped with an extra-high presser foot lifter and a leveling button that keeps the presser foot in balance when moving over lumpy material. These features will prevent the sewing machine from stalling.

what type of sewing machine do i need for leather?

Leather is a unique fabric that doesn't handle mistakes well. So you need to select a sewing machine that provides stitch length adjustments with clean, precise stitching. This method will provide strong seams that places the thread in the right places. As far as working with leather and other thick garment like denim, my favorite model is the Singer 4411.

how do i choose the best upholstery machine?

Since upholstery is a very heavy fabric, you need a sewing machine that has at least a 1 horse-power motor or a 750 servo motor so it has enough power to tackle the project. It is also advisable to look for a sewing machine that has a reverse function to secure the seams in the fewest steps possible. Janome HD1000 is my go-to model for this type of project.

Conclusion: wrap up!

There are a great variety of heady duty sewing machines that are suitable to the types of projects you plan to create in 2017. Decide on the best one based on your budget and the functions that it can provide. You will also want to select one that can grow with you as your skills grow so you can take on more challenging projects with ease.
